Privacy Policy
Effective October 10, 2026 · Applies to the SimpleAvWx app for iPhone and iPad and this website (simpleavwx.com).
SimpleAvWx is published by Simplifly LLC (“we”). This policy explains what the app does with information.
- No account, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking.
- Your location never leaves your iPhone. It's used only for the map.
- Your saved airports and settings sync through your own private iCloud, which we can't access.
- To get weather, the app sends airport codes and airport search text to our server and to the weather data services listed below. If you use flight tracking or delay alerts, it also sends flight codes, flight numbers with their airports, and tail numbers to our server. Our server keeps request logs for 14 days, then deletes them. Saved-flight files are deleted within 10 days. Details are below.
- Notifications are optional and are created on your iPhone. We don't send push notifications and don't have a notification token.
Information stored on your device
- Your airports and settings — the airports you save, My Trip, favorites, display settings, and the last map position. These are stored on your device. If iCloud is on for your Apple Account, Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) syncs them to your other devices through your own private iCloud database. Simplifly LLC can't access that data.
- Imported schedule — if you import a schedule, the file's sequences, dates, flight numbers, airports, and tail numbers are saved on your device only. Sequences other people share with you are saved with it.
- My Airline and Nose number — saved with your settings, so they sync through your private iCloud like your other settings.
- Saved flights — flights you track are saved on your device after they end: the route, positions, altitudes, and speeds. Flights you don't save are deleted after 10 days.
- Delay alerts — a record of which delay notifications were already shown, so each is shown once.
- Calculator values — last values in the calculators and conversion sliders, saved on your device.
Notifications
If you've imported a schedule, the app asks whether it can send notifications. It uses them only for ground stop, ground delay, and EDCT alerts about flights in My Trip. They're created on your iPhone while the app is open. The app doesn't register for push notifications. You can turn them off in Settings → Notifications → SimpleAvWx.
Sharing
Nothing is shared unless you tap a share button. When you share the weather, a sequence, or a flight's track log, the content goes only where you send it. A shared sequence contains its flight numbers, airports, times, and tail numbers.
Location
If you allow it, the app reads your location while you're using it (it asks iOS for accuracy of about 3 km), only to center the map around you and show your position on the map. It never asks for “Always” access. Your location never leaves your device: the app does not send it to us or anyone else. You can turn location off any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → SimpleAvWx. Everything except “Near Me” works without it.
What the app sends over the internet
To get weather and airport information, the app makes requests to these services. They receive what's needed to answer the request. Like any internet service, they also see your device's IP address.
| Service | What is sent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SimpleAvWx server (avwx.simpliflypilot.net, operated by us) | Airport codes (ICAO/IATA) and airport search text | METAR, TAF, D-ATIS, RVR, airport search and runway data, and matching schedule airports. The server gets the weather itself from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov) and FAA feeds; your IP address isn't passed on to them. |
| SimpleAvWx server: flights and delays | Flight codes (for example AAL1927), tail numbers, departure and arrival airports, and FAA flight IDs | Flight positions and routes, saved flights, ground stops, ground delay programs, and EDCTs. Sent only if you track or look up a flight, or have a schedule in My Trip. Delay checks happen automatically while the app is open. To save a tracked flight, the server prepares a file of the flight's track for the app to download. See Flight records on our server. |
| NOAA Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov), contacted directly | Names of the fixes on a tracked flight's route | Fix locations for drawing the filed route |
| Google Maps (only if you choose it) | The airport's coordinates | Opens the airport in Google Maps |
| Apple — Apple Weather (WeatherKit) | The airport's coordinates | Hourly and 10-day outlook |
| Apple — Maps and geocoding (MapKit / Core Location) | Map areas you view; an airport's coordinates (and its code, if you choose Apple Maps) | Map display, the airport's time zone, and opening the airport in Apple Maps |
| Apple — iCloud (CloudKit) | Your saved airports and settings (only if iCloud is on) | Sync between your devices |
| NOAA / National Weather Service map services | The map area you're viewing | Radar images |
| Iowa Environmental Mesonet (Iowa State University) | The map area you're viewing | Radar images and storm cell tops |
| NOAA GOES data on Amazon Web Services | Nothing about you (a request for recent files) | Lightning |
The app does not send your name, email, contacts, location, device identifiers, or advertising identifier to any of these services. Apple handles data under its own privacy policy. The NOAA and Iowa State services are public data services with their own policies.
Our server
Our server answers weather, airport, flight, and delay requests. Our server logs record your IP address, the time, the address you requested (which can include an aircraft's registration, call sign or an airport), and your app/device type. They are deleted after 14 days. Flights you save are prepared as a file on our server and deleted 10 days after it's written, or sooner once your app has downloaded it.
The logs are used only for security and operations, such as stopping abuse and fixing problems. Our other server logs don't record IP addresses, and they're also deleted after 14 days.
Flight records on our server
Flight and delay information comes from FAA System Wide Information Management (SWIM) feeds, processed by SimpleAvWx. It is not official FAA information and may be delayed, incomplete or unavailable during outages. Do not use it as the sole source for flight-safety, law-enforcement or legal decisions. Aircraft enrolled in the FAA LADD program are not shown. Aircraft owners can request LADD listing at faa.gov/pilots/ladd.
The server keeps these flight records for the times shown. Records with your IP address exist only when you track or look up a flight. Aircraft listed in the FAA LADD program are never stored or shown.
| Record | What it contains | How long it's kept |
|---|---|---|
| Request to follow a flight that hasn't started yet | Your IP address and the flight code or tail number | 24 hours |
| A tracked flight the app will save | Your IP address, the FAA flight ID, and a scrambled (hashed) copy of the app's download key | Until the app deletes the key after downloading, the flight file expires, or the flight is removed from the server |
| Flight file for the app to download (the flight's track) | The flight's route, positions, altitudes, and speeds. It's written about 10 minutes after the flight ends. | 10 days after it's written, or sooner once your app has downloaded it. It's deleted right away if the aircraft is added to the FAA LADD program. |
| A flight's live record and trail | The flight's route, positions, altitudes, and speeds | Until 4 hours after the flight ends, unless it's being saved |
| Early flight plan from airline schedules | The planned flight, before its live record appears | From about 26 hours before departure until the flight's live record appears, 30 hours at most |
| Flight-plan history, used to suggest routes | The call sign (for general aviation, this can be a tail number), departure and arrival airports, route, altitude, aircraft type, and times. It has no IP address and nothing about you. | 15 days after the flight ends |
| Delay information for a flight | Ground stop, ground delay program, and EDCT information for that flight code | 18 hours at most |
The app downloads a saved flight while it's open. Once downloaded, the flight is kept on your iPhone as described in Information stored on your device.
The server also archives weather reports (METARs and TAFs) for future features. These are public weather observations and forecasts, not information about you, and they don't include IP addresses or anything else about who requested them.
